Ikea Kitchen Cabinets Cost – I’ve explained our big kitchen project, showing you disassembly, and sharing our financing, and now it’s time to get down to business. Kitchen bones cabinets and their layout, and we know from the start that we want to use the IKEA cabinet system.
Our kitchen is designed to be simple enough to put together at home, but if you want our help with you every step of the way. Here you will find ideas to get inspired by, planners and tutorials to help you bring your kitchen to life, and of course products to create your new full kitchen. Every part feels too complicated?
Why is the IKEA kitchen?
The decision to get the IKEA kitchen comes to two factors: price and modern design.
Price – IKEA is like no other company when it comes to economies of scale their home furnishings. I do not love every thing it’s IKEA, but when it comes to kitchen cabinets, I really do not see any other way to get the size and style of kitchen we want.
Modular and Modern – IKEA cabinets are completely modular – you can buy them in various configurations and customize them to your style to a somewhat surprising level, especially if you, like us, want a more modern and sleek look. Their frameless wardrobes and adaptable doors are modern, flat-walled.
How is the quality of IKEA kitchen cabinets?
I understand that some people are suspicious of IKEA cabinets, because they are made of particle board (similar to MDF – medium density fiberboard). The low cost of cabinets and their material makes some people feel uncomfortable about purchasing.
But let’s take a closer look.
Scoop on particle board & MDF
Most off-the-rack Cabinet systems are also made of several classes of particle board. Other cabinets we could afford (such as Kraftmaid cabinets or other stripes that were sold in stores such as Lowe’s and Home Depot) were also particle boards. You can step up and get a cabinet-grade plywood, but there is some debate as to whether a truly superior particle board or MDF.
But what about Custom-Made cabinets?
To go all the way up and buy a custom-made, solid wooden cabinet box – that just is not worth it for us. Yes, custom-made cabinets can sometimes be cheaper than you expect if you find local resources, but even so, we will have cost thousands of dollars, our money can not justify even if we want to. Our entire cabinet system costs far less than $ 10,000. (See my full price details at the end.)
High quality hardware
To me, the most important part of the cabinet is the drawer. If anything will swell and warp, is the drawer. But IKEA a solid metal drawer, with really great hardware, Blum hinges and drawer shock for soft-closing. (We love shock-I’ll explain more about them in the next post.)
I read profusely at other homeowners’ experiences with IKEA cabinets and talked to my contractor friends. For the most part, they are uniformly enthusiastic. Yes, IKEA cabinets are cheap, but that does not mean they’re bad or thin.
How complicated is your kitchen?
Before I tell you what we learn, I want to show you one more thing about our kitchen renovation that gives us confidence using IKEA cabinets. We basically start with an empty slate. We are building an additional kitchen to our house, so we do not have to deal with weird angles or obstacles. We had the luxury of a simple layout – basically an open kitchen with a long island and straight run cabinets. There was no corner of the wardrobe, and, for that matter, there was a top cupboard either.
If, on the other hand, we have renovated an existing kitchen without the ability to move walls and pipes and with many challenges that fit everything in, I would definitely be more inclined to look into a custom cabinet or at least get more help from the designer kitchen. But the kitchen “two straight lines” type of ideal situation for the IKEA process.
